WORST NIGHTMARE FOR RANGERS

WORST NIGHTMARE FOR RANGERS

Rangers goalkeeper Lewis Budinauckas has been waiting his entire career to make his debut at Ibrox.

But the 22-year-old stopper only had to wait a matter of hours to make his debut for Greenock Morton.

The Ibrox academy goalkeeper has joined the Cappielow club on an emergency seven-day loan and was thrown straight into the starting line up for the trip to Hamilton.

But it was a debut to forget for Lewis Budinauckas who shipped three goals and was on the receiving end of a hattrick from Oli Shaw.

A seven-day loan for the Rangers goalkeeper was announced just hours before kick off in the Scottish Championship clash.

Budinauckas – who was recently involved with the Scotland U21s – was then tossed into the clash at New Douglas Park but fell victim to a a rousing display from ex-Hibs star Oli Shaw.

Shaw was on superb form to hammer in a late hattrick for Hamilton, netting all three goals in a stunning seven minute rout in Lanarkshire after opening the scoring in the 77th minute.

Lewis Budinauckas is also in line to start Morton’s home clash against Queen’s Park in midweek, before finishing the three game loan stint away to league leaders Falkirk next weekend.

Budinauckas also joins ex-Rangers players Kirk Broadfoot and Arron Lyall at Morton, who are 7th in the Championship after the defeat to Hamilton.

Greenock thank Rangers for goalkeeper loan

Greenock Morton had taken to their official website to announce the signing of Lewis Budinauckas only a few hours before kick off against Hamilton.

In a statement, the club explained:

“Greenock Morton can today announce the signing of goalkeeper Lewis Budinauckas on an emergency 7-day loan from Rangers.

“The 22-year-old joins the side ahead of today’s league match against Hamilton Academical and is available for selection.

“We would like to thank Rangers for their assistance and help allowing this deal to take place on such short notice.

“Lewis will wear the number 44 shirt.”

Scottish goalkeeper Ryan Mullen and English counterpart Gary Woods have been Morton’s regular goalkeeping options this season but neither were in the squad for the 3-0 defeat to Hamilton.
