The Magpies currently have a surplus of goalkeepers, after Odysseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy joined the club over the summer. Newcastle United’s first-team squad has five senior stoppers, with that duo joining Nick Pope, Martin Dubravka and Mark Gillespie.

Eddie Howe is well stocked in that position, despite not strengthening it in the way that he had hoped over the summer. Newcastle wanted to sign someone who could eventually replace Pope, with James Trafford heavily linked with a move to St James’ Park.

But for another goalkeeper to arrive on Tyneside, one of the current crop will have to leave.

Update on Martin Dubravka’s Newcastle future

Whether it is in January or the summer, it appears that Martin Dubravka will be on his way out of St James’ Park in 2025.

That is according to iNews, who report that Newcastle are willing to listen to offers for Dubravka ahead of the January transfer window.

They add that the 35-year-old, who joined Newcastle United in 2018, is not expected to be offered a new deal, with the Slovakian’s current contract due to expire in the summer of 2025.

Whether he is sold in January or released at the end of the season, it appears that Dubravka’s Newcastle United career is going to end at some point next year.

Dubravka has barely featured for Newcastle after tough 2023/24 campaign

Newcastle had to rely on Dubravka a lot last season in the absence of Nick Pope. He made 30 appearances in all competitions, but was unable to prove he should be anything more than an understudy to the England international.

The Magpies struggled defensively with Dubravka in between the sticks, as he changed the way that Eddie Howe’s team played – sadly, not for the better.

There was the odd strong performance. He was sensational during a 4-2 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield, while Alan Shearer said Dubravka was ‘wonderful’ during an FA Cup win over Blackburn.
