Alexander Isak’s chances of clinching the Premier League Golden Boot appear to have vanished just three games into the new season.

Despite getting off the mark in the 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur, bookmakers have priced the Swede at a staggering 25/1 to clinch the illustrious award. That marks a dramatic shift from the 14/1 offered before a ball had been kicked.

Isak finished third in the goalscoring charts last season and was fancied as a potential contender for this year’s gong. Alan Shearer was the last Newcastle player to win the award for his 25 goals in the 1996-97 campaign.

Saturday saw Haaland bag back-to-back hat-tricks – with seven strikes in three games placing him four clear of Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Noni Madueke and Bryan Mbeumo. The Manchester City goal machine credited an extended summer break – due to not playing at Euro 2024 – as the reason for his form.

“I feel good,” he said after sticking three past West Ham United. “I feel energised. I had a long vacation and a long pre-season. I’m feeling good. The years here have gone quickly and it’s been going like bam bam bam, now I have a little bit of rest in my body and my feet. I feel really good now and I’m ready for more.

Erling Haaland – the pre-season favourite – is the key reason behind Isak’s hopes diminishing. The 24-year-old is already targeting his third Golden Boots and has enjoyed a rampant start to 2024-25.

“Only footballers know how important it is to have a break and a long enough break. In the end, you need to calm down your body and mind because it’s a long season and it’s not as easy as everyone thinks. I feel fresh and I feel good, it’s the most important thing.”
