Brendan Rodgers has moved to clear up why Arne Engels stepped up for Celtic’s penalty and NOT Reo Hatate.

The £11million record signing took the ball and fired beyond Craig Gordon to grab his first goal for the club on his first start before Luke McCowan also made it a perfect day for the new Bhoys by grabbing the champions’ second to maintain their 100 per cent start to the season with Kasper Schmeichel yet to concede in five outings so far.

But the decision around the penalty was down to HATATE and not Rodgers, who admitted the Japan midfielder is the number one choice when awarded efforts from 12-yards. It wasn’t one that irked the manager with both practicing in training ahead of the game.

He told BBC Sportsound: “Reo was the number one taker. That’s the selflessness of Reo. The number two taker was Arne. They practiced yesterday. Both their levels were high. Arne stuck it away really well. A good performance by him.”

McCowan – also a deadline day arrival – climbed off the bench for the second consecutive game after a dream debut against Rangers. He made his mark with a goal of his own with Rodgers delighted for the former Dundee man. He said: “To be a Celtic supporter and get a goal at Celtic Park, what a special moment for him and his family.”
