Much of the weekend’s Celtic headlines were focused on Hearts striker, Lawrence Shankland, winding up Arne Engels prior to the Belgian converting his penalty at Parkhead.

 

Video captured by Celtic’s Unique Angle showed the Scotland international shouting ‘big pressure’ at Engels as he waited to slot home from 12-yards against Hearts.

Indeed, Engels paid no attention to the Hearts captain and kept his cool to send goalkeeper, Craig Gordon, the wrong way to send Celtic on their way to pick up all three points.

 

And whilst many fans ridiculed Shankland for his trolling effort, Chris Sutton has shared what he really thought of the Hearts skipper’s actions.

 

Sutton ‘quite liked’ Shankland windup

Sutton was famous in his day for winding up the opposition so it should come as no surprise to learn that the former Celtic hero didn’t mind what Shankland did.

Sutton told the It’s All Kicking Off podcast, “My moment of the weekend, Celtic won at the weekend and the first goal scorer was Arne Engels from the penalty spot.

 

“I love this sort of pettiness within football. The Hearts striker, Lawrence Shankland, so Arne Engels, the big new signing for Celtic for £10m and as he is getting ready to take the penalty, Shankland is screaming at Engels, ‘£10m, £10m, big pressure, aye right’ and all that and Engels just strolls up and sends Craig Gordon the wrong way.

 

“So fair play to him. I wonder whether he understood Scottish first and foremost.

“But I sort of quite liked what Laurence Shankland was doing but it didn’t phase Engels at all. He didn’t bat an eyelid.”

 

Engels calmness under pressure

Indeed, it should be pointed out that it wasn’t Shankland who shouted the comment about Engels’ price tag as that appeared to have been shouted by Craig Halkett.

Listen, am I annoyed at what Shankland or his teammates did? No. It’s all part of the game. What I did enjoy, however, was Engels letting his feet do the talking and not his mouth as he coolly tucked away the spot kick.

 

At just 21, the Belgian showed some real composure in a high-pressure moment and to slot the penalty away with such ease could mean that Rodgers has finally found someone he can rely on to put those chances that Celtic spurned on a few occasions last season, away.
