‘Will go’ – Newcastle United have already lined up January move for England star
Newcastle tried, and ultimately failed, to sign the 24-year-old in the summer on the back of his success at Euro 2024 with England. It was a month-long transfer saga that played out in public with Palace chairman Steve Parish often addressing the media, much to the private frustration of Magpies’ sporting director Paul Mitchell.
With the Eagles demanding in excess in £70million, United decided to walk away from a deal but are prepared to test their resolve again in January when Guehi enters the remaining 18 months of his contract. As it stands, it is thought Guehi is unlikely to extend his stay beyond June 2026.
As well as rumoured interest from Liverpool and Manchester City, former Tottenham Hotspur and England striker Crouch believes Guehi is destined to leave Selhurst Park in the near future.
“That was a big, big call for this football club [Palace] to keep hold of him,” Crouch told TNT Sports before Palace’s 1-0 defeat to Liverpool last Saturday. “Newcastle I think came in with £70million, it was their number one target.
“It went on all summer, yeah. I think Guehi will go, I think they’ll really struggle to keep hold of him, a few clubs like Liverpool coming in for him as well. I think he’s done well to kind of get on with it.
“There was a lot of interest after the Euros for him, but, you know, he’s got his head down. He’s getting on with it, and he’s got to do his job for Palace.”
Although Crouch praised Guehi for his reaction to the summer interest in him, not everyone shares the same view.
