Sunderland loss, Barcelona links and first PL goal: How 14 Newcastle players that left this summer are doing
An analysis of the performances of the players that departed Newcastle United during the summer transfer window.
The summer transfer window proved to be a real challenge for Newcastle United as they looked to boost Eddie Howe’s ranks.
A prolonged and ultimately unsuccessful effort to sign Crystal Palace star Marc Guehi dominated the headlines throughout the close season and it would be safe to say the Magpies left their squad undercooked as the new season kicked off. New faces did arrive in the form of Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly, Sheffield United forward William Osula, young defender Miodrag Pivas and goalkeeping duo Odysseas Vlachodimos and John Ruddy. There was also a permanent deal for Lewis Hall after the Chelsea youngster spent time on loan at St James Park.
But the Magpies battle with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations ensured some big decisions had to be made – and two promising talents were eventually sold to help United avoid a stern punishment. They weren’t the only departures from St James Park – but how have those players that left the club during the summer fared so far this season?
Jamal Lewis – Loan to Sao Paolo
The Northern Ireland international has struggled to find form and fitness over the last two seasons and was largely expected to make a permanent move away from Newcastle during the summer. However, the left-back made a shock loan move to Brazilian side Sao Paolo and that is likely to bring an end to his time as a Magpie as his contract comes to an end next summer. Lewis has made three appearances for his new club and made his first start in a 2-0 defeat against Cuiaba.
Miodrag Pivas – Loan to Willem II
The Serbian youth international joined the Magpies during the summer but was immediately sent out on a season-long loan to Dutch side Willem II. A wait for the relevant paperwork to be processed held up his debut but Pivas finally made his Eredivisie bow as a late substitute in a 2-0 defeat against PSV Eindhoven.
