Sunderland and Hull City return to Championship action on Sunday afternoon

The Championship returns this weekend with Sunderland and Hull playing on Sunday afternoon.

The Black Cats are looking to build on the momentum of their last-gasp equaliser against Leeds United before the international break, while Hull will be looking to respond quickly to a heavy defeat against Norwich City last time out. Both bosses have a number of calls to make, so here’s the combined team and injury news as it stands…

Aaron Connolly – could debut

The international break has gone perfectly to plan, Connolly scoring three goals in two U21s games and getting 70 minutes under his belt in the latter fixture on Tuesday night. Now firmly expected to make his Sunderland debut at his former club, probably from the bench.

Dan Ballard – doubt

Ballard has been struggling with an ankle injury in recent weeks and though he could have played some part against Leeds United, it would have required heavy strapping and risked more severe damage. Ballard did not take part in Northern Ireland’s fixtures over the course of the international break and Sunderland’s hope is that this means he can recover properly and be fit to face Hull City. | Getty Images

Eliezer Mayenda – doubt

Mayenda has missed Sunderland’s last few games with a muscle problem but the club have always been confident that it is only a minor problem. The international break came at a good time for him and he’s expected to be fully fit in time for the trip to Hull City. | Getty Images
