Spanish press make worrying claim about Tottenham’s Alejo Veliz

Some worrying claims are being made about Alejo Veliz’s form by the Spanish press as the striker struggles to shine in a misfiring Espanyol side.

Things not going to plan for Alejo Veliz

After a relatively promising start to his loan spell at Espanyol, things have soured quickly for Veliz, who is struggling to impose himself on matches and is having to feed off scraps at the moment.

The on-loan Tottenham man has started eight of the club’s first ten league games of the season but only has one goal to his name so far (Transfermarkt).

The newly promoted club are struggling to get points on the board, having lost four of their last five league matches, and currently languishing in 15th place in the table.

Alejo Veliz’s form is a symptom

A recent report in AS (as translated by Sport Witness) suggests that Veliz’s poor form is a ‘symptom’ of what is going on at the Catalan club, with manager Manolo Gonzalez struggling to get the best of the young players at his disposal.

The report says that the Argentine is getting no service and having to do most of his work far away from goal, which is not allowing him to showcase his best qualities.

Damaging defeat on Saturday

Espanyol were thrashed 4-1 by Athletic Club on Saturday at Sam Mames, with the away side struggling to impose themselves on the game at any point.

It is pointed out that across the 49 minutes that Velix played, his average position was in his own half, which shows that Gonzalez’s men were pinned back for most of the game.

According to the report, the 21-year-old had no shots across those 49 minutes and made just four passes.
