Sky Sports pundit calls James Tavernier ‘brilliant’ despite Rangers humilation v Celtic

Neil McCann dubbed James Tavernier as “brilliant” after he nearly set up Cyriel Dessers to score for Rangers in their 3-0 defeat at Celtic on Sunday.

In the first five minutes of the Old Firm showdown on 1 September, it was all Rangers with Philippe Clement’s men seeming to be out for vengeance.

At one point, Tavernier played in a great pass to Dessers, who failed to test Kasper Schmeichel before the linesman spared his blushes by raising the offside flag.

McCann didn’t excuse Dessers for his miss but was impressed by the right-back’s ball into him.

“Yeah but he [Dessers] didn’t know that [move was offside], it was a brilliant pass from James Tavernier,” McCann said on Sky Sports (1 September).

“To slip from Bernardo, Rangers applying that press again, there’s not a lot in that [offside].”

Rangers needed to capitalise on their positive attacks from either flank

Rangers have lost against Celtic in the first Old Firm clash of the season. But, from the moment that the game kicked off, it felt like the Gers were dominant in one area of the pitch.

That area being on either flank. Tavernier and new arrival Jefte were among the Gers’ best players at the start of the game and the vast majority of their attacks came from the pair.

However, despite both Tavernier and Jefte dominating their own sides of the pitch, nothing came to fruition in terms of an attack.

Tavernier’s pass was the best chance of the first 10 minutes for the Gers and if they managed to capitalise on their dominance, the scoreline could’ve been vastly different at half-time.

Vaclav Cerny has also made the right-wing role his own since arriving at the club but unless they can manage to pick their form up in the final third, it feels as if Clement’s men are already a step or two behind the likes of Celtic and Aberdeen.
