Shocking News: Rangers has finally confirm the departure of James Tavernier just now…

James Tavernier’s time as a Rangers starter may now be over after his poor performance against Motherwell in the Scottish League Cup semi-finals at Hampden Park on Sunday.

It’s no secret that the Gers have been rather underwhelming this season. Philippe Clement’s men were expected to put up a decent challenge for the title and, although they’re now in the final thanks to their 2-1 win over the Steelmen on 3 November, their league performance has been shocking.

Indeed, some of the Gers’ players have had decent seasons such as summer arrivals Nedim Bajrami and Vaclav Cerny, but the rest have been poor.

Tavernier has been given a lot of criticism this season and it’s clear to see why after his performance against Motherwell.

He was substituted at 1-1 and it took just a matter of minutes for the Gers to find a winner, with the team noticeably improving once Tavernier and Cyriel Dessers had been hauled off.

It is fair to say this does not bode well for the skipper going forward, with Clement surely now seeing the side is better off without the 33-year-old starting.

Rangers need to drop James Tavernier

While the right-back has been a stalwart for the Ibrox outfit since his arrival all those years ago, it seems that, as he’s got into the latter stages of his career, he’s become a far worse player.

Rangers have Dujon Sterling and Neraysho Kasanwirjo, who could both likely put in a better shift at right-back rather than the ageing Tavernier.

While the Englishman’s set-piece play might be up there with the best in the league, his speed now seems to have left him and his defensive work has also left a lot to be desired this term.

Sterling and Kasanwirjo also have much more athleticism than the 33-year-old and the duo seem to be able to keep up with the fast-paced play that the Gers have experienced recently.

If Clement wants to turn things around and save his job, a good first step would be to drop the 33-year-old and experiment by starting one of the aforementioned pair.

They are currently nine points behind both Celtic and Aberdeen in the league and while this is a rather large gap, it can be hacked away at if the Gers manage to find some sort of consistency.
