Illan Meslier has been a polarising figure since relegation from the Premier League at Elland Road, with some stunning saves and clean sheets partnered with some questionable performances and standout weaknesses to his game.

Up next is Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, an opponent where one of his best saves ever in a Leeds shirt came last season in that 1-0 defeat.

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris admirers Illan Meslier

Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris is familiar with Meslier from well before his scouting reports of the Whites in buildup to tonight, having worked at FC Lorient while the French stopper was on the books there.

Meslier played under Le Bris in Lorient’s reserve team, and it’s clear that the Sunderland boss has a lot of time for the Leeds ‘keeper.

Speaking ahead of the game to the Northern Echo, Le Bris said:

“I worked with Illan from when he was very young, with the reserve team. I had the chance to work with many young players, and it is always great when you see them grow up and do well.

“Illan is a good example of that. I know that he still has good potential to perform at the very highest level.

“Of course, the journey for any young player is difficult. You can have bad moments and better moments, but he is a good guy and a good person. I like the player, but I like the person as well.

“I will be very happy to see him, although I hope he will not do too well on the pitch and that he will have to be looking at his net to take the ball out. That would be nice.”

Meslier needs to kick on after initial Leeds emergence

Leeds had a generational goalkeeper talent in their midst when Meslier first broke through, and he looked like one of the best young ‘keepers in the world during our first season in the Premier League.
