Sean Dyche said he was not expecting further signings during the summer but teased: “We will have to wait and see.” Everton have brought in five players so far – the latest, Jake O’Brien for around £17 million, confirmed just hours before the friendly with Coventry City.

The centre back has long been on the radar of the club and the Blues swooped over the weekend as Premier League rivals looked set to step up their interest.

Speaking after the defeat at the CBS Arena on Tuesday night, Dyche said he was pleased with the deal for the 23-year-old and added: “He is a young centre half in the sense of his journey to where he is but who played a lot last season for Lyon and we want him to come in and enjoy what the challenge is.”

Dyche said the O’Brien deal was not a pre-cursor to any movement over the future of star centre back Jarrad Branthwaite, who Everton have twice rejected bids for this summer. He said: “That is not the situation. We are doing our best with the finance available to construct what we hope is a side that can keep growing and adding some of these players shows a sign of that. But it is a squad we want to keep growing and while it is stretched at the minute, as they come together, they are all going to be part of that.”

Asked whether he anticipated anymore players to follow O’Brien, Iliman Ndiaye, Jack Harrison, Tim Iroegbunam and Jesper Lindstrom, he said: “I don’t think so with the finances that we have got, or haven’t, as the case may be. But we will have to wait and see.”
