Rangers slammed over Todd Cantwell and Ianis Hagi amid what Matt O’Riley is doing at Celtic

Simon Donnelly has criticised Todd Cantwell and Ianis Hagi for not featuring in the Rangers squad against Dynamo Kyiv.

The duo were absent from the Light Blues’ squad, as they lost 2-0 and were knocked out of the Champions League.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard on 14 August Donnelly has compared the wantaway Gers stars to Celtic’s Matt O’Riley and believes they could have had a positive impact against Kyiv.

He said: “The likes of Cantwell and Hagi, I don’t know the background of either situation but you look at what was on display last night and if these guys didn’t start the game they could have been on the bench.

“You only have to look at Celtic with Matt O’Riley and there’s loads of speculation around him but he’s still playing and performing.

“I don’t think that squad can do without those types of players. Whether it is the answer for Rangers in the long run, you can debate that but, looking at the performance last night, those players could have been used and coming on in that second half.”

Todd Cantwell slammed for Rangers absence

The Englishman has had an up-and-down spell ever since moving to Ibrox after his spell at Norwich City ended in disappointing circumstances.

Last season the attacking midfielder was only able to register eight goals across 44 appearances in all competitions [FotMob].

Despite a sub-par goal output, Cantwell made the decision not to feature for Rangers to begin the season to try and find a move elsewhere.

So far for himself and Hagi, who has done something similar, the transfer window hasn’t gone how they would have hoped leaving them in a grey area right now.

It is frustrating for fans travelling to Hampden that these players are showing so much disrespect to Philippe Clement and the club, especially ahead of such an important game.

The clash finished in Dynamo Kyiv’s favour which sees Europa League football return to Ibrox once again.

This may be the way out that Cantwell and Hagi have been looking for as their sales could make up for the financial shortfall after missing out on Champions League qualification.
