Rangers ‘looking into’ injury situation as £4m mystery leaves Ibrox club perplexed
Rangers director of recruitment Nils Koppen has been giving Ibrox fans plenty to talk about during the international break.
First, the Rangers recruitment guru spoke with RangersTV at length about his time in Glasgow as he approaches a year heading up the club’s recruitment department.
Since then Nils Koppen has been popping up all around after doing a substantial two-part interview with the Rangers Review where he speaks about everything from his success stories at PSV to transfer interest in Abdallah Sima.
But of all the additions Koppen has made so far at Rangers, there is one deal which is under immense scrutiny and one which the Belgian insists will pay dividends in the years to come.
Oscar Cortes injury mystery continues
When Rangers signed Oscar Cortes on loan from RC Lens in January, not much was known about the Colombian winger.
Only 20-years-old, it has since transpired that Rangers’ links to networking event TransferRoom struck up a conversation about the ex-Millonarios talent, who had only been in France six months.
After a initially bright start at Ibrox, Cortes picked up an injury in a win away to Kilmarnock in March which led to surgery.
With the winger recovering in time for the start of pre-season, Rangers had seen enough to sign a reported £4m loan-to-buy extension for Cortes in the summer.
But on day one of the new season, Oscar Cortes pulled up against Hearts and suffered an injury which ruled him out of Champions League qualification and the early part of the season.
With Cortes returning after the September international break in the 1-0 win over Dundee United, the Colombian’s rotten run of injury problems would soon continue.
Suffering a training ground injury which Philippe Clement put down to ‘bad luck’, the Rangers manager expressed confidence that there are no fears regarding the winger’s injury record.
At the time of writing, it remains unclear just how long Rangers will be without Oscar Cortes as a result of this latest injury problem.
