Rangers get desperate in hunt to upgrade Cyriel Dessers at striker with loan signings mooted

Rangers are now getting desperate as they close in on the new season with Cyriel Dessers still the top striking option, says Derek Ferguson.

The Gers have been linked with the likes of Albion Rrahmani and Lawrence Shankland this summer but have so far been able to add a goal-scorer aside from youngster Hamza Igamane who is not ready to contribute.

Ferguson believes Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen need to start widening the net and considering anybody else who might be able to contribute, with loans a possible avenue to increase the firepower.

He is far from convinced that Dessers can successfully lead the line as a number one again despite some positive signs in preseason and two goals in the 4-4 draw with Union Berlin, while he has previously stated Danilo is going to be weeks off full-speed.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News about Dessers he said: “Yeah he scored 22 goals and his stats look pretty good but he’s Marmite, you either love him or you hate him.

“He produced a lovely flick for the goal for [Scott] Wright [vs Birmingham] but is he going to take us through the season to win us a league championship? I don’t think so.

“That’s how desperate we are at the minute. We would take anybody that came up.

“We need to start looking at loans, whether it’s in England or whether it’s closer to home, and try to get these guys through the door.

“Because something needs to change to change the mood, we need a spark from somewhere.”

Albion Rrahmani, Lawrence Shankland prominent Rangers targets

Igamane may prove to be an excellent pick-up somewhere down the line but there doesn’t appear to much expectation of an impact any time soon.

The pursuit of Rrahmani at Rapid Bucharest has proven frustrating so far. A new bid is reportedly due to arrive for him soon [Sorin Ciriac, 29 July] but it is not clear where from, so there might be a late revival there yet.

And Clement appears to have only locked into the idea of a bid for Shankland in recent days, and he is now armed with the cash to go for it [Daily Record, 29 July].
