Rangers contract development for senior ace key reaction to so many mistakes of the past

Rangers reacting to being burnt so frequently by senior players leaving for nothing by moving to sort a contract extension for John Souttar is “common sense”, says Derek Ferguson.

The Daily Record reported on 25 August that the Gers were close to securing a new deal for the Scotland international, whose current contract has two years left to run, after Ben Davies’ loan exit to Birmingham City

.Souttar, 27, has become a regular after an injury-hit start to life at Ibrox following his move from Hearts in 2022 and would certainly cost money the club don’t have to replace, so Ferguson is glad the club are finally learning their lesson to avoid another free transfer exit in the future.

He exclusively told Ibrox News: “The reason is we’ve made so many mistakes in the past with letting players run their contract down.

“Do you know something? I don’t think John Souttar was one of the big earners so it makes sense if you can get another year or two onto his contract. I don’t think it’ll be an increase in his wages so I think it’s probably one of the easier deals to be done.

John obviously enjoys where he is, he’s at a big club. We’ve made so many mistakes in the past in just letting the boys run their contracts out so this is the start of people getting their heads on and going about their business and doing things right.

“It’s common sense, that’s all it is.”

The list of players who have left Ibrox for nothing is long and embarrassing, and has helped contribute to the slog of a transfer window Philippe Clement has just struggled through.
