Rangers coach announces a devastating news

Todd Cantwell has “let himself down” during his time at Rangers before he submitted a transfer request to depart Ibrox, according to John Hartson.

Phillipe Clement has confirmed that the midfielder had asked to leave Ibrox this summer having been surrounded by transfer speculation over the course of the transfer window [Heart and Hand, 24 July].

While the Gers boss insists the door is not closed on the Englishman, Go Radio pundit Hartson believes both the Belgian and the supporters will have been left angered by Cantwell’s actions.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (1 August, 41:10) he said: “I think the fans will be bitterly disappointed.

“When you think he comes up from Norwich, the move was a good one at the time as he put in some really good performances, I did think he let himself down once or twice with his antics around the pitch, his diving antics.

“Take that away, I think the boy had talent, he had the ability to break into the box and get goals and he couldn’t certainly play every week in the Rangers team there’s no doubt about that.

“That would be disappointing for the supporters.”

Will Todd Cantwell exit Rangers amid Ibrox transfer speculation?

This was always going to be a summer of transition at Ibrox and while supporters will have expected players to depart Glasgow, they wouldn’t have expected many players to push for moves out of Clement’s ranks as Cantwell has.

The Englishman has always divided opinion ever since he arrived from Norwich and that remains the case, with pundits and supporters alike slamming his antics both on and off the field.

As Hartson suggests, he has never managed to cover himself in glory week in and week out, particularly in the biggest matches of the season and that will have left a bitter taste in supporters’ mouths.

It will be interesting to see where he ends up if and when he does actually move away from Ibrox. It seems very unlikely his displays in a Rangers shirt will have encouraged a big club to take a gamble on his signature.
