Player who Everton sold last year named in list of top 100 players in the world

Everton’s financial errors have really come home to roost in the past few years, hampering the progress of the club under Sean Dyche’s leadership.

The 53-year-old, who knew what he was signing up for when he moved to Merseyside in 2023, entered at arguably the worst possible time.

Right before deductions were about to hit, and after so many of the club’s star men had been sold, few would have blamed him for walking straight back out the door.

However, he has stuck by the Toffees, and done an admirable job under the circumstances.

One of those major sales has come back to bite Everton though, no matter how necessary it was at the time.

Anthony Gordon named in top 100 current players

After all, the £45m gained for Anthony Gordon in January 2023 did prove crucial in somewhat balancing the club’s books, even if they were dealt with an eight-point deduction the following campaign.

However, having seen what FourFourTwo have just published, and following a fine first full season at Newcastle United, some might reconsider despite the growing animosity between player and club.

After all, they have named the 23-year-old in their list of the top 100 players in the world at the moment.

Settling in at number 89, ahead of the likes of Luka Modric, Heung-min Son and Emiliano Martinez, they write: ‘England’s wealth of options in attack can be summed up in one stat from the 2024 European Championships. Anthony Gordon spent a grand total of six minutes on the pitch.

‘Whilst he does have some tough competition at international level, it is remarkable considering Gordon’s outstanding consistency in 2023/24. Gordon deservedly claimed the Player of the Year award at Newcastle United in his first full season with the Magpies. Ferocious speed and improved decision making has made him one of the best wingers in the top flight.’

Did Everton make a mistake by selling Anthony Gordon to Newcastle United?
