Philippe Clement told he has made ‘rod for his own back’ after new Rangers transfer admission

Rangers manager Philippe Clement has made a “rod for his own back” with his latest transfer admission, according to Stevie Clifford.

The Light Blues are looking to cut their wage bill between now and the end of August, with Todd Cantwell and Scott Wright expected to follow Ben Davies out of the Ibrox exit door in the coming days [Sky Sports, 28 August].

Clement admitted after the Gers’ win over Ross County last time out that he was expecting there to be more incomings than outgoings this week and Four Lads host Clifford believes that may come back to bite him.

Speaking on the Rangers Review YouTube channel (28 August) he said: “The manager has made a wee bit of a rod for his own back on Saturday.

“He said there would be more incomings than outgoings. That’s three potentially going out the door so when are the four arriving?

“People will take everything very literally and if he meant more incomings to the first team that started that day, is there just going to be one arriving? Has he miscommunicated what he’s trying to say?

“The problem is, if we’ve all read that, we’ve all listened to it and thought if he’s getting rid of three, four are coming in, because that’s what he said isn’t it?”

Are Rangers close to any new signings ahead of the Ibrox transfer deadline?

As Clifford suggests, Clement has raised expectations with comments after the win over Ross County as supporters will now expect a string of new arrivals in Glasgow before the window slams shut.

While there is still time for a couple of new additions to be made in the coming days, it would be a surprise to see more than a handful of faces in the squad ahead of the clash with Celtic, let alone four new players.

Perhaps, Clement’s comments have been slightly misinterpreted as has been suggested, but the Belgian seemed pretty confident that there would be more movement into the club than there would be out of it.

Now that the Light Blues appear to be set to get a few big wages off of their bill, they may well be able to spend in the coming days. But it is unclear what sort of budget Clement will have to play with between now and 30 August.
