PHILIPPE CLEMENT says Sunday’s Scottish Premiership clash against Dundee United at Tannadice provides a fresh challenge for his Rangers side as they look to return to winning ways.
Domestic action resumes following the international break and the Light Blues make the trip north to face a United side who have won their last three games on the spin.
The Gers boss believes his side are a work in progress owing to the raft of changes within the squad over the summer, but says he’s determined to create a positive story with the players and supporters.
Speaking to the media to preview the clash, Clement said: “It’s now about focussing on the next game.
“There are 34 games to be played in the league, while we’re in two cup competitions and a lot of games in Europe.
“There will be a lot of challenges in the next couple of months and a lot of interesting games. The next game is the important one.
“We spoke about the end of a cycle last season. 16 players left the club, and I think the average age of the players who left is around 28.
“We brought 11 new players in, with an average age of around 23. But you need time to work with the boys.
“Football is not about just putting 11 players on the pitch, giving them the ball, and doing something.
“You need to work and build connections on and off the field. There are a lot of things which need done, and that takes time.
“We’re working hard on that with the whole group. I see a very energetic group with a lot of young players, hunger and potential.
“I’m very positive about the story with them and to work with them and make them better.
“The team have shown good things in moments, and the team also had difficult moments in the last couple of weeks.”
Clement also provided an injury update ahead of the trip to Tayside following the return today of several international players.
Sunday will also be the first opportunity for Rangers supporters to catch a glimpse of deadline day signings, Nedim Bajrami and Neraysho Kasanwirjo, with the Gers boss sounding a note of caution around the former’s readiness to start.
He added: “It [the international break] is always a strange period because you lose some players.
“On the other hand, we could work with the ones who were here. We had some good training sessions and several players coming out of injury.
“We also have players who are new in the building, like Nana, so we can work with them. We had a good friendly with Motherwell last week.
“We used the time with all of the players who were here, and then you’re hoping nothing happens to any of the players on international duty.
“It looks the case, although Ross [McCausland] got a knock which I don’t think will be a problem come Sunday.
“Nedim trained with the team for the first time today. He signed the day after he was at the game then he left for the national team. It was his first minutes with the squad today.
“It doesn’t help if you don’t even know the names of your teammates. He’s just in the building, but we’ll see and it depends on circumstances.”
