Leeds United must pay Championship record-breaking fee for ideal Summerville replacement

Leeds United will need to pay £25m to prise Jack Clarke away from Sunderland, according to TEAMtalk.

Leeds United need to make some statement signings in the late stages of the summer transfer window to fill their fans with confidence again.

The Whites have sold some key players, including star winger Crysencio Summerville. The Dutchman was crucial in getting Daniel Farke’s side to the play-off final but when they fell short at the final hurdle, it was widely expected that a move would be around the corner.

That move did indeed come to fruition, with West Ham swooping in.

Leeds United have been linked with numerous potential replacements, one being academy graduate and current Sunderland star Jack Clarke. Now, fresh claims over his price tag have emerged.

TEAMtalk states that Sunderland will demand £25m for Clarke if they’re to sell him at this late stage in the summer transfer window.

If it was to be Leeds United to meet that big asking price, it would see them break the record for the biggest fee paid by a Championship club by some distance. The current record is £15.3m, which was paid when Burnley signed loan man Mike Tresor permanently earlier this year.

The ideal Summerville heir?

It would be a huge surprise if Leeds United were able to sign Clarke from Sunderland. They sold him to Tottenham Hotspur five years ago after his eye-catching breakthrough at Elland Road but only back in the Championship with Sunderland has he kicked on as hoped.

The York-born star failed to breakthrough at Spurs and numerous Championship loans failed to bear fruit. A loan in League One with Sunderland saw him regain confidence and they signed him permanently following promotion.

From there on, Clarke has never looked back. He’s become one of the Championship’s best players at Sunderland and looks primed and ready for a move to a higher level.
