Chris Sutton has reacted to a controversial VAR incident in the first half of Rangers’ showdown with Dundee United at Tannadice.
Philippe Clement’s side got back to winning ways in the Premiership after the international break as they picked up a solid 1-0 win on Sunday (15 September) to remain within touching distance of Celtic.
Although the Light Blues were in control for much of the game, they felt the home side should have been reduced to 10 men when Emmanuel Adegboyega caught Connor Barron with a late tackle, but Sutton wasn’t convinced.
Speaking on Sky Sports Football on Sunday (15 September, 12:56) he said: “It’s the right decision. I don’t think there’s that much contact. I don’t think he’s overly high.
“I think if Rangers players are honest and look back at it after the game they’d be disappointed if he got a red card for that. It’s not a red, I think it’s about right. It’s a daft challenge.”
Should there have been a red card in Rangers v Dundee United?
It’s safe to say that Adegboyega’s tackle is the sort of challenge that has warranted a red card in the past. The Dundee United man flew in recklessly and could have genuinely injured Barron with that challenge.
Luckily for the Light Blues, the midfielder managed to get up without any issues and played the second half without showing any signs of injury, but it could have been a hell of a lot worse.
The decision to not initially hand Adegboyega a red card was potentially forgivable because of the pace at which he flew into the tackle. However, VAR simply has to get involved in this scenario to bring some consistency to the decision-making.
