Joe Gelhardt exit update emerges after Leeds United wage developments

Joe Gelhadrt didn’t leave Leeds United in the summer transfer window because of his current wages at Elland Road, according to Graeme Bailey.

The 22-year-old forward hasn’t started a league fixture for the Whites in over a year and has only made one cameo appearance in the Championship as a last-minute substitute against Sheffield Wednesday.

While several pundits and supporters expected the young attacker to depart Elland Road ahead of the new season, journalist Graeme Bailey admits that he remains on Premier League wages.

As quoted by Leeds United News (6 September) he said: “I think so, but he is on huge money at Leeds.

“That is the reason he is still at Leeds, he’s being paid far too much money. He has got Premier League wages.

“He might play apart but I don’t envisage it that much between now and January. Not that you wish ill on anyone, but you’d hope he isn’t needed between now and January.”

Why did Joe Gelhardt not exit Leeds United in the summer transfer window?

For whatever reason, it is clear that Gelhardt just isn’t rated by Farke or the current hierarchy at Elland Road, despite being held in high regard earlier in his Leeds career.

The 22-year-old may not have been given loads of chances over the last year or so under the German, but when he has played he has done very little to suggest that he should be a regular starter in the Championship.

In an ideal world, the Whites would have managed to find a way to get him off of their wage bill before the 30 August deadline, but that won’t be easy to do if he is on Premier League wages.

There won’t be another club in the Championship willing to match those terms, particularly on a player who has yet to show that he can perform week in and week out as a starter in England’s second tier.

Hopefully, Leeds will be able to find a different solution when the January window rolls around as they won’t want to be wasting money on a player who is clearly not high in Farke’s pecking order.
