Jamie Vardy to Rangers transfer claim made live on talkSPORT

Jamie Vardy to Rangers transfer claim made live on talkSPORTAlly McCoist has revealed that he tried signing Jamie Vardy for Rangers during his time in charge of the club.

Ally McCoist said live on talkSPORT [20 August] that he asked the Gers to sign Vardy before he joined Leicester City in 2012 and went on to score over 100 Premier League goals, but was informed they could not afford him.

Rangers EXODUS: Seven stars to be sold, HUGE Ryan…

The 37-year-old Premier League winner is back in the English top-flight with Leicester and scored a crucial equaliser in the 1-1 draw with Tottenham on Monday [19 August].

Philippe Clement could use a striker like Jamie Vardy at Rangers

Rangers supporters would give anything to see Vardy lining up for Philippe Clement this season, even at the age of 37.

It is a classic tale of what if. Rangers were in a different place 13 years ago, at which point Vardy was leaving Fleetwood Town for Leicester and embarking on a magical Premier League career.

Had McCoist found the funds to make the move a reality, the Englishman would have never won the Premier League but surely would have fired the Light Blues to many Scottish Premiership titles.

Even at 37, he could still do a job in the SPFL and Europa League but acquiring a striker of his quality is likely beyond the Gers’ means.

Clement was eager to move on Cyriel Dessers earlier in the summer and, following the arrival of Hamza Igamane and Danilo, another striker is not on the agenda for the rest of the transfer window unless the Nigerian is moved on [Rangers Review].

The Light Blues have named their price for Dessers to interested parties [Rangers Review, 3 July] and will sanction a sale if that valuation is met. But with more pressing areas of concern on the pitch, it would be a reactionary move rather than proactive.

As always with Rangers, a big-money offer in the final 10 days of the transfer window could tempt the club to move Dessers on and find a striker that could take the Gers to the next level, much like Vardy would have all those years ago.
