The annoyance of Daniel Farke at Leeds United missing out on several targets led to the club betting on Ao Tanaka in the dying embers of the summer transfer window last week.
Leeds forked out a €4m fee to snare the midfielder away from German second-tier side Fortuna Dusseldorf on the final day of the summer transfer window.
The German team were not planning to sell the player in the final days of the transfer window but were shocked by Leeds agreeing to match their asking price for the Japanese international.
Tanaka produced a brief cameo in Leeds’ 2-0 win over Hull City last weekend and has already been tipped to be the ‘bargain of the summer‘ for the Whites.
According to Rheinische Post (via Sport Witness), the Japanese midfielder was not the first-choice target for Leeds and the club were looking at other players before signing him from Fortuna Dusseldorf.
Leeds struggled to bring in the players that the recruitment team and Farke had identified and the German manager was left fuming by their failings.
The club eventually understood the frustration of their manager and moved to bring in Tanaka to strengthen the Leeds squad on transfer deadline day.
Leeds are hopeful that the midfielder will hit the ground running and make a real impact as they push to get promoted to the Premier League this season.
The Whites are currently sitting fourth in the table and will return from the international break with a big game against Burnley and Elland Road on 14th September.
Leeds United also lost Georginio Rutter to Brighton, the Seagulls activated the Frenchman’s release clause of £40million. A fee that Danny Murphy claims is absurd for an “inconsistent” player.
