GOOD NEWS FOR RANGERS FC:HE IS BACK FINALLY…
Rangers will look to strengthen their defensive midfield options in January, sources have told Football Insider.
Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that manager Philippe Clement, 50, believes Rangers are light in defensive midfield and would like to add a powerhouse operator but admits the club’s financial situation makes it tricky.
The Belgian manager likes to play two defensive-minded midfielders to shield the back-line but currently only has Nicolas Raskin and Mohamed Diomande suited to do so.
Diomande has been the more impressive of the two, providing two assists in 393 league minutes, creating seven open-play chances, and boasting a pass accuracy rate of 84 per cent.
It’s understood that Rangers will be looking for a cut-price deal to add depth as the club look to catch up to unbeaten duo Aberdeen and Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premier League.
Rangers prioritise January defensive midfielder deal
Rangers have the chance to reduce the deficit on the top two as Celtic and Aberdeen face off at Parkhead after the international break on Saturday, October 19th.
Scotland’s most successful club remain five points off the top two, who both have 100 per cent records from their opening seven Scottish Premier League games.
Clement’s side will travel to ninth-placed Kilmarnock, aiming to add to their three-game winning streak following their Old Firm humiliation earlier in the season.
Defensive midfield isn’t the only position Rangers are looking to strengthen in, the Glasgow giants could be set to reignite their interest in Hearts striker Lawrence Shankland.
