Forgotten Rangers star who signed on same day as James Tavernier left unemployed as he joins ex-heroes in trial match

THERE’S just days to go now until the transfer deadline slams shut – with stars all over Britain desperate to get signed up.

Free agents, of course, can also move outside of the window – and there’s plenty of them still around.

That includes former stars of major clubs – with the PFA south of the border organising a showcase match of former top pros against Cambridge Utd yesterday.

The squad for the PFA side included one high-profile former Rangers star, as well as ex-wonderkids from Arsenal and Man Utd.

The man in question is none other than Martyn Waghorn, the bustling striker who signed on the same day in July 2015 as James Tavernier – and from the same club, Wigan.

He was a big scorer during his time at Ibrox, bagging 44 goals in 63 starts for the club.

He also scored in the Scottish Cup semi-final win over Celtic, even if the Ibrox men were beaten by Hibs in the final.

While Tavernier has been there ever since, Waghorn was only there for two years, prior to moving to Ispwich for an undisclosed fee.

He’s since had two spells at Derby County in addition to stints at Huddersfield and Coventry City.

Now 34, he’s looking for his next opportunity – and ironically yesterday’s opposition Cambridge Utd was the same as his last match, as he came off the bench as a late substitute in Derby’s 1-0 win against the same opponents in April.

He was joined in an all-star PFA select side of unemployed players today by former Man Utd kid Ravel Morrison and one-time Arsenal wonderkid Carl Jenkinson.

There was a couple of other former SPFL players in there too, in the form of ex Aberdeen star Michael Hector and one time Motherwell and St Mirren defender Charles Dunne.
