Five Nottingham Forest players on notice as Nuno faces key transfer decisions

Latest Nottingham Forest news as the Reds boss looks to trim squad numbers during summer transfer window

Nottingham Forest have made it a priority to trim numbers this summer amid head coach Nuno Espirito Santo’s preference for working with a smaller squad.

The Reds set the tone from the start by releasing six players at the end of their contracts and sending five loanees back to their parent clubs. Wayne Hennessey, Felipe, Cheikhou Kouyate, Loic Mbe Soh, Scott McKenna and Harry Arter officially left at the end of June, along with loan players Gonzalo Montiel, Divock Origi, Nuno Tavares, Gio Reyna and Rodrigo Ribeiro.

The window so far has also seen Odysseas Vlachodimos, Brandon Aguilera, Orel Mangala and Moussa Niakhate depart on permanent transfers. Jonathan Panzo and summer signing Marko Stamenic went out on loan earlier in the summer.

There is still work to be done, however, and we have taken a look at the players with question marks against their futures at the City Ground.

Joe Worrall: After the Reds’ opening friendly with Chesterfield, Nuno said decisions would be made about players who had returned from loan spells. “We have to take a good look at all of the aspects and decide what is best for them and their careers,” the Portuguese said.

Worrall comes into that category, having spent the second half of last term on loan at Besiktas. He is expected to move on this summer – a transfer that would mark the end of an era for the Nigel Doughty Academy graduate. Sheffield United remain keen but it might be towards the end of the window when anything happens.

Matt Turner: The arrival of Brazilian Carlos Miguel has pushed the American further down the pecking order. He now finds himself as third-choice goalkeeper, with Miguel and Matz Sels to battle it out for the No 1 spot.
