Everton now expected to make ‘official approach’ for £20m player whose head has already been turned

It has been a wonderful transfer window thus far for Everton, and the good thing is, we are far from finished.

Plenty more additions can be expected as Kevin Thelwell rushes to revolutionise his squad ahead of the new season, and whilst the attack is currently the focus, midfield and defensive recruits will surely soon come.

However, for now, the director of football is still working on one problem position that has plagued him all summer.

Amadou Onana sale could fund Everton transfer

Everton’s summer had stalled somewhat ever since the signing of Iliman Ndiaye, but it was always expected that such patience was for a reason.

After all, the Toffees certainly are able to spend, having posted a net transfer profit in their last three Premier League seasons. It was just whether funds were actually available with the lack of ownership.

Well, with Amadou Onana’s move to Aston Villa, they now need not worry, and one report from the Yorkshire Evening Post has provided an update on Everton’s interest in Wilfried Gnonto for around £20m, and how this £50m sale might buoy their efforts.

It reads: ‘Everton’s £50 million sale of midfielder Amadou Onana to fellow Premier League side Aston Villa could fund an official approach for Leeds United’s Willy Gnonto after repeated links throughout the summer window.

‘It was widely speculated that links to Everton and a Premier League return are said to have turned the youngster’s head, which may have led to the submission of a transfer request. While there are no such indications this time around that the player is keen to depart Elland Road, Everton’s interest remains but is yet to materialise in an official approach.’
