Dortmund’s new £15m striker might’ve signed for Rangers before turning heads across Europe

It’s been a slow transfer window for almost every club this summer, not just Rangers.

In fact, that Rangers have completed six deals already is actually well above average with this season’s transfer window grinding to an international halt.

With the Copa America and Euro 2024 limiting negotiations, it’s only now that we’re starting to see transfer business properly ramp up.

Throw in the Saudi Arabian window opening last week and money is starting to move across football.

But as one of the most protracted transfer deals of the window is completed, it might have Rangers fans thinking what could’ve been as Borussia Dortmund sign a new number nine.

Dortmund sign Guirassy

Serhou Guirassy was one of the hottest properties in Europe this summer after an explosive season with VfB Stuttgart in Germany last campaign.

The Guinean striker, 28, netted 30 times for the German side with links across the Bundesliga, Premier League and La Liga as a result.

But early on in the window did Borussia Dortmund look like the only destination for Guirassy and in a transfer which is symbolic of a stuttering window, it’s only just been completed.

There were murmurs of issues in the striker’s medical as the Guardian report that Dortmund will pay close to £15m for the hitman after meeting Guirassy’s release clause.

But Rangers fans will note that things might’ve been very different indeed if Ibrox interest in Serhou Guirassy was realised back in the January window of 2020.

Rangers once tailed Guinean hitman

Rangers fans might remember Serhou Guirassy being linked to the club under the management of Steven Gerrard.

The striker was turning out for Amiens in the France when Courier Picard claimed that the Gers were interested in a deal.

It was suggested Rangers had scouted the hitman extensively and were rivalling the likes of Premier League Brighton for the striker’s signature.

Six months later however, Guirassy would move to Ligue 1 side Rennes in a £15m deal and Rangers’ interest never resurfaced.

After two years with Stuttgart, it appears Guirassy is now coming into his prime and Rangers fans will be left wondering ‘what if’ as the French-born striker signs for Dortmund.
