Done Deal:Rangers plan to sell James Tavernier and sign replacement just now…

Rangers are planning to offload James Tavernier at the end of the season and have already begun working on signing a replacement as early as January, sources have told Football Insider.

This comes after a number of underwhelming performances from the captain so far this season, with a growing feeling from the Ibrox hierarchy that it is time for both parties to move on.

Tavernier’s current contract runs until 2026, but Rangers want to sell him in the summer of 2025 in a last-ditch attempt to raise money from his departure.

The 33-year-old will have spent ten years at the club come the end of the season, and has made 479 appearances since the move from Wigan in 2015.

His 126 goals and 132 assists in that period have established him among the legends at Ibrox, while he has also helped to lift the SPFL title, Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup.

However, his declining performances have raised major red flags behind the scenes, with the transfer team keen to bring in a replacement as early as January.

Rangers open to James Tavernier sale as they line up potential replacements at Ibrox

Football Insider revealed in September that Gers could look to cash in on their captain in January after failing to reach an agreement during the transfer window.

However, a January exit is viewed as unlikely given the lack of depth in Philippe Clement’s side and his continued importance to the team and the dressing room.

The recruitment team at Ibrox have begun drafting a shortlist of potential replacements for whom they will move after the right-back’s departure.

However, the financial situation at Ibrox has limited their room to manoeuvre in the transfer market and they may be forced to wait until the summer to land a deal.
