DEAL DONE: Ranger have sign their best player….Damian Garcia
Rangers will be hoping that the January transfer window closes with a happier support than when the summer window closed.
Philippe Clement didn’t get the squad that he wanted with the manager still having areas of concern that need to be addressed.
One of those is midfield with a summer target potentially on the move and with a considerably price cut to the fee Rangers would have to pay.
Damian Garcia made available after Rangers transfer interest
Damian Garcia was originally going to be out of contract at the end of 2024 until he extended his deal with Penarol to December 2026.
The Uruguay international is highly rated from his time winning the Under-20 World Cup with his country and drew excitement from Rangers fans when he was named as a potential prospect.
According to ESPN, Garcia could be on the move with the fee needed to seal a permanent transfer a relatively paltry £3.2m.
His availability comes as Penarol consider signing Leonardo Fernandez from Mexican outfit Toluca with the combative midfielder being a makeweight in the deal.
Garcia’s agent isn’t happy about his player potentially being a bargaining chip though:
“Afterwards, if the matrix can be expanded because the amounts of the transfers are similar, we have no problem,” Edgardo Lasalvia clarified on a potential swap.
“But we will go to Toluca as long as the coach is going to count on the player , Damián has enormous potential and what we are looking for is that, wherever he goes, he can develop and continue his growth.”
Did Nils Koppen blunder by not strengthening problem position?
Garcia was valued as highly as £11.75m in the summer which seemed to rule Rangers out.
With his Penarol future in doubt, Rangers might consider making another move for a position that Nils Koppen pulled the plug on during the last window.
