DEAL CONFIRMED;Rangers confirm the replacement of former manager-Philip Clement

Rangers should turn to title-winning ex-manager Steven Gerrard amid uncertainty around the future of Philippe Clement.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, ex-England goalkeeper Paul Robinson has backed his former teammate to take the opportunity to regain control of Rangers but admits it’s a ‘very different’ club to the one he took over back in 2018.

The 44-year-old manager was able to steady the Rangers ship following nearly a decade of immense turmoil on and off the pitch, leading them to the 2020-21 Scottish Premier League title.

Football Insider revealed (September 6) that Philippe Clement is “fighting for his job” at Rangers after his team’s shattering defeat to Celtic.

Rangers should turn to Steven Gerrard – and the Ibrox faithful would ‘love it’

Clement is yet to win an Old Firm derby after five attempts, drawing one and losing the other four, including their recent 3-0 defeat in the first of the 2024-25 season.

In stark contrast, Gerrard won eight, drew one, and lost four derbies during his just over two-year tenure at the club.

“They always say never go back, don’t they?”, Robinson told Football Insider.

“And with Steven, think the legacy that he left, I think he did a great job there, I really do.

“I think there would be an opportunity there for him to go back, it would be a brilliant hire and the fans would love it, but I think it would be a very different Rangers to the one he took over.

“The squad is obviously very different under Clement, regardless of how you get on against everyone else, it’s how far you fall behind the boys across the city.

“Missing out on the Champions League, their performances against Celtic, yes they got beat 3-0 but they were still in the game.

“Brendan Rodgers’ record in Old Firm derbies is great, and I think that’s where they’re going to get judged.
