DEAL CONFIRMED;Anthony Gordon confirm imminent contract extension with club
Just 18 months left on his Toon deal – despite joining from Everton less than two years ago – sent the St James’ Park hierarchy into panic. Gordon has developed into one of Newcastle’s best players since arriving for £40million, becoming a regular fixture in the England setup.
Summer interest from Liverpool emerged as the Magpies scrambled to get over the June 30 FFP/PSR deadline. Newcastle ultimately offloaded Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to alleviate the financial pressures.
But that did little to quiet speculation linking Gordon with a possible move to his boyhood club. An underwhelming start to the season saw debates emerge about the 23-year-old’s commitment to Newcastle – fears that were put to bed last week.
Gordon starred for the Magpies – bagging from the spot – against Manchester City just hours after news broke about his imminent contract extension. The winger is set to sign a lucrative six-year deal that will see him become one of the club’s top earners.
“I didn’t need any persuading to stay here,” Gordon said after the City game. “I have been excited to sign the (new) contract for a long time. It shows my commitment to the club, which has never been in question.
“An amazing day. (They are the best) best fans in the country and they carry us through games like that! Eddie (Howe) just said in the dressing room that he got a Newcastle United display there.”
However, Football Insider claim a new contract will not end Liverpool’s interest. There were suggestions in the summer that Gordon fancied the Merseyside move but he U-turn to become one of Newcastle’s top earners.
Toon chiefs – including outgoing CEO Darren Eales – also made it clear that Gordon, Alexander Isak or Bruno Guimaraes would not be sold. The Newcastle ace’s new contract – worth a rumoured £140,000 per week – is yet to be officially announced by the club.
