DEAL CONFIRMED: Celtic has agreed to the deal with Leeds united just now…

Two of them will be at home to Club Brugge after the International break and then Young Boys in January.

McFadden says Celtic’s atmosphere at home in Europe is ‘mental’ and the Leipzig players wouldn’t have been prepared for it, and most importantly, ‘surprised’ by it.

He warned that you can have all the experience you want, but you can’t prepare for such occasions, as he told Open Goal.

“The home games are different (in the Champions League),” said McFadden. “The build-up to their games is ridiculous. The build-up to noise is mental, so there is no way you can start on the back foot. Sit back and wait. You know that they are just going to go for it.

“I was talking to somebody before the game and they were saying ‘Leipzig would be used to playing in big atmospheres’. I am like, they absolutely will. But normally for a league game where it’s not the same.

“A Champions League night at Celtic Park is absolutely ridiculous. You see when the anthem comes on and the players are lining up. I am not saying you can’t enjoy it. But you can’t prepare for that. Good players enjoy that type of atmosphere, but they still would have been surprised by how loud it was.”

The Champions League standings make interesting reading for Celtic fans.

On one hand, they are 15th, in a play-off place, but would love to be higher. But, on the other, they have momentum and are only three points off second-placed Sporting Lisbon.
