Celtic’s most prominent shareholder, Dermot Desmond, has shared his thoughts on the team’s current direction under Brendan Rodgers.

Desmond rarely appears in the media and seldom talks about Celtic publicly.

In the country over the weekend for the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrew’s, BBC Scotland managed to get the billionaire’s current thoughts on the way the Bhoys are playing.

Celtic have had an electric start to the season, winning all of their domestic matches and thrashing Slovan Bratislava.

However, the 7-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund was a sore one to take, and the team still has a lot of work to do to prove themselves in the Champions League.

Brendan Rodgers has received some criticism for his approach and tactics in that match, which he responded to defiantly last week.

Desmond is delighted with the job that his manager is doing.

Dermot Desmond is’ really pleased’ with Celtic right now

Desmond said [BBC]: “I am very pleased. I think we have played good football. We had a good start and could have played bad football, but we have played very good and exciting football.

“Unfortunately, we weren’t at our best on Tuesday (vs Dortmund), but I like what we are doing, what Brendan is doing, and I think we have a good squad.”

On hopes for the Champions League campaign, the Irish businessman added: “I would like to see some good results, home results and maybe nick a point or two away.

“I think we have done exceptionally well so far. It’s interesting to play eight different teams, four at home and four away with all different rankings.

“I think it makes it exciting for the club, the supporters and people generally.”

Dermot Desmond was instrumental in Brendan Rodgers Celtic return

The Irishman has been a big backer of Rodgers, and he was a key component in convincing the manager to come back to Celtic in the wake of Ange Postecoglou’s exit to Tottenham Hotspur.

Rodgers said back in May, after winning the Scottish Premiership title: “The support I’ve been given has been unwavering right the way through the season. I’m always thankful to Dermot Desmond for bringing me back.

“That was such a brave decision from him and the board to take me back knowing that maybe it wasn’t going to be universally acclaimed no matter how successful I’d been. They had the foresight and the acumen to be able to convince me to come back and I’m so glad I did do.”

Rodgers is very happy right now. He’s testing his team at the highest level, he’s been backed in the transfer market, and he’s energised to bring more success to the club.
