Coventry City hijack claim for Todd Cantwell addressed as Rangers exit nears

Journalist Alan Nixon has rubbished reports that Coventry City could hijack Blackburn Rovers’ move for Rangers ace Todd Cantwell.

A six-figure fee has reportedly been agreed between Blackburn and the Gers for the attacking midfielder (Daily Record) with the move set to be finalised on deadline day.

There were some murmurings, largely from Coventry message boards it appears, that Rovers’ Championship rivals could look to steal a march and sign the 26-year-old.

Nixon was asked about those rumours on his official Patreon account (29 August), but he shot them down pretty swiftly.

Rangers say good riddance to Todd Cantwell

Cantwell was already a polarising figure at Ibrox before it was revealed by boss Philippe Clement this summer that the former Norwich City midfielder had put in a transfer request to depart the club this window.

Not many would doubt that Cantwell has plenty of talent and the ability to be a real game-changer on his day but his ability to perform in the biggest clashes is something that could certainly be called into question.

It has to be said there will be very few tears shed when Cantwell finally does depart and not many will be unhappy to see him return south of the border to the English Championship.

What will be difficult, however, is making sure bodies are brought into the building on deadline day with time running out for the Gers to strengthen Clement’s squad, something they really need to do to make sure they are strengthened in their bid to usurp Celtic in the Scottish Premiership.

In other Rangers news, one of the club’s top targets wants to join on deadline day.
