‘We are close…’ – Club confirms they are about to sign player amid Rangers exit links

Aris Limassol have confirmed they are “close to a new signing” amid links to Rangers defender Connor Goldson.

The Cypriot side’s press officer Kostas Papadopoulous told SPORT FM 95.0 on the subject of a new centre-back that the matter was not easy but they were doing their best to close the deal while declining to name the player.

Aris are believed to be interested in a move for the Ibrox centre-back after he flew out to the island and are said to possess the “financial muscle” to afford him, according to Cypriot football podcast This Is Mappa (21 July).

Papadopoulos said, via This Is Mappa (23 July): “We are close to a new signing. Things are not so easy as it involves several moving parts. We are doing our best to conclude a deal. We will not divulge any names”

Connor Goldson and James Tavernier both set for Rangers exits

Goldson looks set to move on and it feels like that is the best course of action for him and the Light Blues after a difficult past season.

James Tavernier is also thought to be on the brink of an exit to Trabzonspor [The 4th Official, 20 July] so both the captain and the vice-captain could soon be gone.

Defensively they have struggled of late but they have both filled key leadership roles during a challenging time for the club so what they have contributed can’t be overlooked.

In footballing terms Philippe Clement needs to continue phasing out the old guard to help revamp a squad which ultimately threw away a title challenge and a Scottish Cup to Celtic last season.

The Belgian will probably miss Tavernier’s goals more then either of the veterans’ form in defence but will need to replace both either.
