Clement blamed for Rangers £40m failure amid Ibrox boardroom blundering

Gary Keown has slammed Philippe Clement and the Rangers board after missing out on a financial boost from Champions League qualification.

The Gers were knocked out of the elite competition thanks to a 3-2 aggregate defeat at the hands of Dynamo Kyiv.

This saw the Light Blues miss out on much-needed revenue which Keown has blamed Clement for in his column for the Scottish Mail on Sunday on 1 September (page 99).

He said: “Thanks to much boardroom blundering, the Ibrox club are back in the realms of talking a lot about the longer term.

“Current manager Philippe Clement landing a new contract, despite blowing a £40m Champions League windfall against Dynamo Kyiv, points towards that being the strategy.”

Philippe Clement blamed for Rangers failure

It has to be said that the Gers fell out of the Champions League thanks, in part, to a controversial moment at Hampden Park.

Jefte was sent off for an innocuous challenge which left the whole of Hampden shocked and ultimately swung the game in Dynamo’s favour.

This saw Rangers demoted to the Europa League where they will now play against the likes of Tottenham and Manchester United.

Although being in that competition is a plus, the financial benefits are not the same which represents a blow to the club and its hierarchy.

The likes of John Bennett has come under fire in recent weeks and months for his influence at Ibrox which has seen the club drift further away from Celtic.

This Champions League money would have been an excellent boost but the full blame doesn’t rest at Clement’s door.

There are many problems surrounding the Light Blues with the manager just one cog in the machine.
