Chris Sutton fires Champions League jibe at Rangers fan ahead of Old Firm clash v Celtic

Chris Sutton has fired a new Champions League jibe at a Rangers supporter ahead of the Old Firm clash against Celtic at Parkhead.

The Light Blues make the trip to the Green side of Glasgow for the first derby of the season on Sunday (1 September) as Philippe Clement looks to finally break his duck against Brendan Rodgers’ Hoops.

While the Gers have had to settle for Europa League football, Celtic have once again booked their place in the Champions League and one Rangers fan has told Sutton that could play into Clement’s hands.

Speaking on BBC Radio Five Live (24 August, 1:10:33) the supporter said: “Chris is talking about smaller clubs having ambition and all that.

“Chris, see when you go into the Champions League? You’re going to get battered every week. When you do and you come back to the league and it will be a Wednesday and Saturday, that’s going to impact your league form I think.

Sutton replied: “I think that you make a very fair point. It’s a pity Rangers aren’t in the Champions League to experience that, but great point.”

Will Rangers beat Celtic in first Old Firm clash at Parkhead?

While Sutton never misses a chance to fire a jibe at the Gers, it will be interesting to see whether or not the Champions League and Europa League have an impact on this season’s title race.

Celtic will have the harder games and while that could mean that they’ll be knocked out earlier, their European fixtures could well take a greater physical and emotional toll on Rodgers’ side over the course of the season.

Alternatively, Clement’s Light Blues have a much better chance of progressing, but therefore may ultimately end up playing more matches and that could lead to more injuries and a greater level of fatigue.
