Celtic will smash transfer record to sign Arne Engels as only £1m difference remains after talks escalate

Celtic are prepared to smash their transfer record in order to get Arne Engels over the line after submitting a £10m bid but Augsburg still want more – according to a report.

Brendan Rodgers has made the Belgian midfielder his top target to replace Matt O’Riley after flogging the Dane to Brighton for a record £26million. Now the Hoops are prepared to beat their own record on money spent, which technically remains £9m on Odsonne Edouard, with the deal that brought Adam Idah back to Parkhead only surpassing that if add ons are activated.

Augsburg have already booted out a £6.5m offer for Engels, and Celtic went back in with a £9m wad. The Bundesliga side are holding out for in excess of £10m and the Premiership champions are willing to meet that with negotiations ongoing over the deal, according to Sky Sports. Boss Jess Thorup was planning to have Engels in his squad for Sunday’s league clash with Heidenheim, but money will talk and an agreement is expected to be reached before the window closes on Friday night.
