Celtic have ‘enormous’ advantage over Rangers after confirmed deal
Celtic have an enormous advantage over Rangers after securing Champions League football and making a significant profit from the Matt O’Riley sale to Brighton.
That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider qualifying for European football’s premier club competition every season makes up a “massive” part of Celtic’s revenue.
Brendan Rodgers’s side booked their place in the Champions League after securing the Scottish Premiership title last season.
But Rangers missed out on Champions League football after they were beaten by Ukranian side Dynamo Kyiv in the third qualifying round, meaning they have to settle for a place in the Europa League.
Celtic have also received a further boost to their profits after O’Riley moved to Brighton for an initial £25million, with potential add-ons taking the deal to around £30million.
Celtic are in strong financial position after Matt O’Riley deal
Borson suggested that money and the cash from the Champions League will ensure the Glasgow giants are in a strong financial position this season.
“The key thing really for Celtic every year is Champions League,” Borson told Football Insider.
“It just dwarfs all other revenue streams. It’s so significant, especially now where you can get yourself 10 games and earn up to £50million.
“It’s a massive part of their revenue and profit, especially where you’re the only team getting it and Rangers are not getting it.
“It’s an enormous advantage and then you leverage on top of that the O’Riley sale to Brighton.
“But because Champions League is almost a reoccurring income stream, that’s the more important income stream.
“But clearly, where you make a big win like £30million on a particular transfer, that’s fantastic.
“You would expect them to be investing that in the side because, with Champions League, they are in a good position.”
