Celtic announce special guest to unfurl league flag ahead of Kilmarnock Premiership opener

The Hoops have confirmed that one of the club’s favourite sons will take centre-stage for the ceremony

Celtic have announced that Lisbon Lion Jim Craig will unfurl the league flag at Parkhead on Sunday.

Brendan Rodgers’ side begin their quest for 55 by hosting Kilmarnock this weekend as the Premiership campaign finally gets underway. And the Double-winners have confirmed that special guest Craig will take centre stage for the ceremony as the Hoops celebrate last season’s title triumph before kick-off.

Legendary Craig, 81, was part of the most famous team in the club’s history as Jock Stein’s iconic side beat Inter Milan in 1967 to become the first British club to lift the European Cup. As well as the biggest trophy of all, Craig won seven league titles, four Scottish Cups and four League Cups during his seven years at the club.

Known by his team-mates as ‘Cairney’, the former Scotland defender made 231 appearances for Celts before going on to play for Hellenic FC, Sheffield Wednesday and Waterford. After hanging up his boots in 1975, Craig enjoyed a long and successful career as a dentist and has represented Celtic as an official club ambassador since 2019.

And one of the Scottish champions’ favourite sons will be given a warm reception this weekend as he takes the honour in front of a sold-out Celtic Park.
