Breaking News:Todd Cantwell told to ‘get a grip’ as Rangers return mooted after exit

Rangers manager Philippe Clement needs to tell Todd Cantwell to “get a grip” if he doesn’t exit Ibrox ahead of the August transfer deadline, according to James McFadden.

The Englishman has submitted a formal request to leave Glasgow this summer and despite some speculation around his future, he is yet to complete a transfer with the deadline now looming.

Clement has previously insisted the door isn’t closed on the midfielder and Sky Sports pundit McFadden believes the Belgian will have to reintegrate him back into the first-team fold if he doesn’t depart.

Speaking on the Open Goal YouTube channel (15 August, 36:32) he said: “The only thing is, if the transfer window shuts and you’re paying him, you need to get a hold of him and say get a grip you need to try and help the team.

“You cannot keep paying him to do nothing. If he doesn’t leave before the window shuts it’s because nobody wants him, if he doesn’t play until January nobody is going to want him and if he doesn’t play in the summer nobody is going to want him.

“Then you come in and say, get a grip, apologise to the group and show a good attitude. If you show a good attitude you can play. If you play and you do well you can leave in January.”

Will Todd Cantwell exit Rangers amid transfer speculation?

As McFadden suggests, it would be counter-productive for Rangers if Cantwell is sat in the stands every week until the January transfer window if he isn’t able to find a move away from Ibrox in the next couple of weeks.

If Cantwell doesn’t get a move before the window slams shut, it is in everybody’s best interest for him to return to the first-team fold. The question is whether or not both he and Clement are willing to suck up their pride and reverse their decision.

Hopefully, it won’t come to that and somebody will move to sign the attacking midfielder before the end of August. But Clement, Cantwell and Rangers have to have a contingency plan in place in case that doesn’t happen.
