Breaking News:Rangers sacking Philippe Clement only continues cycle of chaos
I don’t live in a bubble. And I’m not stupid enough not to realise why Rangers fans are becoming seriously restless right now.
I’ve seen all the stats that have been flying around over the last few days and they don’t make good reading either. As things stand Philippe Clement’s win percentage is worse than Michael Beale’s was over an almost identical period of time in the job and the run of results towards the end of last season and at the start of this one have been nowhere near good enough.
But, as worried as the fans might feel right now – and I’m one of them – I firmly believe this is not the time to start talking about getting rid of yet another manager. There’s been way too much of that over the last few years and this constant chopping and changing flies in the face of everything Rangers Football Club have always been about.
It’s created a cycle of chaos and knee-jerk reactions, like the decision to sack Gio van Bronckhorst a few months after he had led the club to a European final and picked up a Scottish Cup. So, yes, while I’m as concerned as everyone else about what’s been going on, it would be madness to rip everything up again at a time when Clement has been given a new, long-term contract and trusted to oversee a period of change.
As difficult as that transformation might feel at the moment, Rangers have a responsibility to see it through and show faith in the guy who is having to make some really tough decisions. What I would say, however, is that, while implementing those changes, the club also has a responsibility to remember what it’s always been there for in the first place – what it’s always been built on.
And that’s to win games of football and deliver trophies for the fans. No amount of imaginative projects or big plans for the future will cut it in the here and now if they’re not watching a winning team performing on the pitch. And that’s why the next couple of weeks are so important.
