Breaking News:Rangers ‘regret’ mooted at Ibrox after what happened in Europa League

Peter Grant has suggested Rangers may “regret” their missed chances against Malmo if Europa League progression comes down to goal difference.

The Light Blues got their European campaign off to the perfect start with a 2-0 win in Sweden on Thursday (26 September) thanks to goals from both Nedim Bajrami and Ross McCausland.

Although the Gers were impressive, they did spurn several chances to add to their tally and Go Radio pundit Grant insists that could come back to bite Philippe Clement’s side in the coming weeks and months.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (27 September, 4:40) he said: “That may be important, goal difference may be important because there are so many games.

“Even simple things like that come into it so they may be looking back with regret in a situation like that because that may be the difference between jumping two places and making you qualify.

“That’s why you have to be clinical. That’s the only thing you worry about last night with Rangers, if they had been more in control in the final part of it, they could have got four or five goals.

“What a result that would have been for them, that would have given the goal difference as well. Goal difference could be so important to jump a couple of places.”

How do Rangers qualify for the next stage of the Europa League?

While Rangers should have certainly scored more than two goals against Malmo, the most important thing for the Light Blues was finding a way to claim all three points and get their Europa League campaign off to a winning start.

Of course, it would have been better if the Gers had put their opponents to the sword, but the important thing is they got the job done.

There is still an awful lot of football to be played in the new-look group stage of the competition and it is far too early to be thinking about qualification into the round of 16.

If it does come down to goal difference, maybe then some players in the Ibrox changing room will live to regret their missed chances against Malmo. At the moment, however, all focus will be on Hibernian.
