Breaking News:Rangers loanee provides selection headache for Airdrie boss after fine save in cup win

Airdrie player-boss Rhys McCabe admits he doesn’t know who will be his No.1 goalkeeper this season after Rangers loanee Kieran Wright made a stunning save in their win over Queen of the South on Saturday.

The Diamonds boss has been given a selection headache with the Ibrox loan star and Hibs loan ace Murray Johnson both competing to be handed the gloves for next weekend’s Championship opener at home to Raith Rovers.

Both have played two games apiece in the group stages of the Premier Sports Cup, with 19-year-old Johnson between the sticks for the 8-0 win over East Kilbride and the 2-1 defeat to Aberdeen, while 24-year-old Wright featured in the 4-3 win at Dumbarton and the 2-0 win over Queens that secured their place in the last 16 of the cup.

Wright came up with a tremendous stop at 0-0 on Saturday to deny Kieran McKechnie a certain goal, throwing himself across his line to thwart him from close range, and now McCabe now has a decision to make, having previously trusted Johnson during another loan spell in 2022.

He said: “Kieran’s save probably comes from our own doing but that is his job. He is in there to make big saves and there will be times when he is required when hasn’t been involved or not really touched the ball in a large period of time. Credit to him, he made a big save and that was the catalyst for the clean sheet.

“There will be decisions to make not just on the goalkeeper but all the way through the squad.

“We will assess that in training. If we think whoever is taking their eye off the ball or being sloppy or lazy and the second choice is ready to step in, then that’s what will happen. We need that drive and competition for places throughout the squad. If we all have that, the standards will get better. As a club, as a team, as a manager, we want high standards.
