Rangers to replace Ben Davies after Birmingham loan

Robin Propper’s injury so soon after arriving this summer has reinforced how Philippe Clement can’t risk leaving himself short of cover at the back, following a first campaign at Ibrox where his centre-backs were regularly unavailable.

There appears to be a clear interest in signing a third winger of the summer window, after Vaclav Cerny and Oscar Cortes, on much the same basis after the Colombian was ruled out following the first game of the season at Hearts, amid interest in Egyptian international Ibrahim Adel [Daily Record, 27 August].

Clement has been after another central midfielder for weeks despite the Connor Barron’s arrival after leaving Aberdeen, with links to the likes of Norwich’s Kenny McLean, Manchester United’s Hannibal Mejbri, and Sevilla’s Joan Jordan all ending in disappointment.

But despite much of the speculation heading into the window focusing on how the Light Blues would upgrade on Cyriel Dessers at striker it is now not expected that another number nine will come in [The Rangers Review, 27 August].

In a major turnaround the club instead find themselves relying heavily on the Nigerian, who has five goals already this term, with Danilo half-fit and Hamza Igamane yet to feature.
