Breaking News:Rangers have ‘everything to play for’ as defiant Jack Butland sets ‘no friendlies’ standard…

Philippe Clement remains in situ, fighting for his job in every game, knowing that the doors closed on the last chance saloon for him a long time ago.

Despite being out of every domestic competition and, almost, no chance of silverware heading back to the Ibrox trophy room, Jack Butland believes that the players will still be going all out for the Rangers manager.

Jack Butland insists that Rangers season isn’t over

Speaking after the win against Hearts, where he was man of the match and topped the Rangers News player ratings, Butland was quick to shoot down claims that the season is over:

“There’s everything, always everything to play for,” Butland said. “No friendlies here, there’s no free hits, there’s no games that you can toss aside as being, it doesn’t matter, there isn’t that.

“Because no matter the game, if you don’t get the right result, the reactions are the same. That’s what this group is going to have to expect and as a result of that, the focus is to win every game.

“It’s what the standard is and it’s what the fans need now, it’s what the club needs, is some real positivity, some performances that they can see progress in. But ultimately, they need to see results and that’s what we need to focus on, one game at a time between now and the end of the season.”

What exactly do Rangers have left to play for?

All Rangers can do now, is close the gap on Celtic, and maybe progress in the Europa League.

There is no longer any leeway for Clement after using up the last of his nine lives some time ago.

A New Year derby win shouldn’t be an outlier and wins in the remaining two derbies would give a modicum of hope, even if it would make no difference to the pain of seeing Celtic lift another inevitable treble.

Unless Rangers pull off a miracle of epic proportions and win the Europa League, the season is going to be a failure, therefore, demanding that every game is won between now and when the curtain falls can’t be setting them up for failure – because that has already been achieved.

The standards are there for a reason and it’s up to Clement and the current squad to reach them, not for the fans to lower expectations.
